Good morning, friends! Welcome to another heart-to-heart. Let’s venture into a conversation that might seem challenging, but is worth discussing – the choice to retire away from your family.

Just as we arrange the decor in our homes, making bold or subtle changes over time, we also shape the trajectory of our lives. One such potential shift could be the decision to retire away from family. While this decision might seem daunting, it’s also an opportunity for self-discovery, adventure, and personal growth.

Some people can’t stand the idea of being away from their adult kids and grandchildren, while others don’t enjoy being the babysitter of last resort. They have their own plans on Saturday night and that’s ok too!

The Pros:

  1. Independence: Retirement is a time to reconnect with yourself, pursue passions, and enjoy newfound freedom. Living away from family can provide the independence to structure your life around your interests.
  2. New Adventures: Relocating can open up a world of new experiences, cultures, and opportunities to meet diverse people. It can be the beginning of an exciting chapter filled with exploration and discovery.
  3. Personal Growth: This choice can push you out of your comfort zone, paving the way for personal growth. It’s an opportunity to learn, adapt, and evolve.

The Cons:

  1. Distance from Loved Ones: Living away from family means missing out on regular gatherings, special occasions, and the joy of watching grandchildren grow up.
  2. Lack of Immediate Support: In times of need, physical distance can pose challenges. Even with the best planning, there are moments when you may need family support.
  3. Adjustment Issues: Adjusting to a new environment, building a new social circle, and navigating unfamiliar surroundings can be challenging.

As we look into making such a life-changing decision, here are some considerations:

  1. Connectivity: How well-connected is your new home? Are there convenient transportation links to visit family or for them to visit you?
  2. Community: Are there community centers, clubs, or groups where you can meet like-minded individuals and avoid feeling isolated?
  3. Healthcare: Does the new location have good healthcare facilities? As we age, easy access to healthcare becomes increasingly important.
  4. Comfort Level: Have you spent enough time in your chosen location to know that you’d feel comfortable living there long term?
  5. Emergency Plan: Do you have a plan for unforeseen situations? Knowing who to turn to for help in emergencies brings peace of mind.

Deciding to retire away from your family is like choosing the right piece of art for your home. It’s a deeply personal decision that can change the entire ambiance of your life. As we ponder together this Sunday morning, let’s remember that every decision in life comes with trade-offs. What’s important is to make a choice that resonates with your inner self, nourishes your soul, and brings a smile to your face each morning. Here’s to embracing change, one day at a time, on this journey, we call life.
